Lebanon, General Introduction
With more than 7000 years of history behind it, Lebanon had been continuously populated since prehistoric time. Generations and empires passed, and Lebanon has remained. Lebanon of today, the land of Canaan or Phoenicia of that longtime ago, is going along the shore of the Mediterranean North to South; The “Mount Lebanon” range is our backbone, running parallel to both the sea and the eastern range, “Anti Lebanon”, the natural border with Syria. The high Beqaa plateau, located between the 2 ranges, is our main granary and the spring of the Litani & Orontis Rivers. The Mount Lebanon range or the west range, whose length extends 150 km, culminates at a height of 3088m & constitutes 4000 square km, almost the half of Lebanon area; it has many gorges, spring & valleys; it had been once covered with cedar forests and is now under reforestation. Beirut is the capital, the pearl & the heart of the Levant. Our history is similar to the one of the fabled Phoenix, the bird with the firy plumage which dies at one time, only to be reborn from its ashes at another. Lebanon is a semitic word meaning white, according to the white snow covering its peaks. It is boardered South by Palestine, East & North by Syria, & West by the Mediterranean sea. Our Currency is the Lebanese Lira & our economy is based on: Banking, (banking secrecy since 1956), trading, tourism & private initiative. Lebanon enjoys affording a tourism choice variety: cultural tourism(archeological sites covering all the ages, museums, large number of universities, continuous cycle of conferences & lectures , artistic exhibitions, Theatre, concerts, etc.), leisure ( winter & summer sports -sea & snow, night life, shopping, fashion, international & local festivals,..) business, medical, and plastic surgery etc..
